I have found after researching the children of William Rily an d Hile y McCowan's children that there may be a Tackett connection. So me of Wm. Rily McCowan's children used the Tackett name from around 1 874 un til between 1900 to 1910. I do not know why they changed thei r name. I have a copy of a letter dated November 11, 1966 from Hann a McCowan Hodge to her sister, Martha McCowan Roark that gives us som e informat ion as to why the name change could have taken place (see l etter in f ile). I was told that Wm. Rily McCowan was raised by a ste p father i n Wayne County, Kentucky.
William Rily McCowan was buried in the Old Mt. Pleasant Cemeter y in t he Northern part of Laurel County across the road from where th e old Mt. Pleasant Bapist Church was. The old Cemetery was located ab out 4 to 6 miles off of Hwy 490. In the Spring of 1987, after findin g the g rave site of Wm. Rily McCowan's in a wooded area, unmarked an d uncare d for, a grandson, John Conrad McCowan had Wm Rily McCowan' s remains removed from the old Mt. Pleasant Cemetery to the new Mt Pl esant Watk ins Cemetery to be poaced beside his wife Hily Ann Watkin s McCowan. A head stone was made for both, Rev. Wm Rily McCowan and h is wife an d placed at their grave site.
