Colquhoun
Colquhoun is a territorial name, and is derived from the Baron y of Co lquhoun,
in the parish of West Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire. Th e chief of the clan is Colquhoun
of Luss and the clan's territories a re on Lo chlomonside, where their slogan,
Cnoc Ealachain, is taken fro m a well -known mountain.
The founder of the family of Colquhoun of Luss was Humphrey de K ilpat rick of
Kirkpatrick, who obtained from Malcolm, Earl of Lennox , durin g the reign of
Alexander II, a grant of the lands of Colquhoun , pro s ervitio unius militis.
Ingram, the son of Humphrey Kilpatrick , was th e first who assumed the name
of Colquhoun.
The lands of Luss were acquired during the reign of King Rober t II, b y marriage
with the "Fair Maid of Luss," heiress of the Hous e of Lus s of that
Ilk, descending Maldwin, Dean of the Lennox, 1150.
Sir John Colquhoun of Luss was Governor of Dumbarton Castle unde r Jam es II,
and Luss was erected into a barony in 1457 for his grands on, a nother Sir John.
Sir Humphry Colquhoun, 12th Laid of Luss, acquired the Heritabl e Coro nership
of Dunbartonshire in 1583. From his brother and heir, S ir Ale xander, descended
Sir Humphrey, 17th Laird of Luss, who marrie d a dau ghter of Houston of that
Ilk, by whom he had only a daughter , Anne, w ho in 1702 married James Grant
of Pluscardine, second son o f Grant o f that Ilk; and being resolved that the
young couple shoul d succeed h im in his whole estate and honours, in 1704 he
resigned hi s baronetc y to the Crown, and obtained a new grant--to himself in
lif e rent, t o his daughter and son-in-law in fee, providing that their h eirs
shou ld adopt the name and arms of Colquhoun, and that the estate s of Gran t
and Luss should never be conjoined. Sir Humphry died in 17 15. Jame s Grant succeeded
as Sir James Colquhoun of Luss; but his eld er broth er dying without issue in
1719, he succeeded to the estates o f Grant , and resuming that name, was succeeded
in the chiefship of Co lquhou n and the Luss estates by his second son, Sir Ludovick.
He, o n the de ath of his elder brother, unmarried, also succeeded to the es
tates o f Grant, and that of Luss went to his younger brother, James , who wa
s officially recognized by Lyon as chief o the name of Colquh oun in 1 781. He
was created a baronet in 1786, and from him descend t he prese nt line of Chiefs
of whom Sir Iain Colquhoun of Luss, 7th Bar onet, an d 28th Chief, was created
a Knight of the Thistle. The seat o f the ch iefs is Rossdhu House, Luss, Dunbartonshire.

MacDonald (Clan Donald)
No clan has exercised such a powerful influence in early Highlan d his tory as
the MacDonalds, Kings of the Isles and of Man, Lords o f the I sles, and Earls
of Ross. At one period of their history thei r power r ivalled and indeed threatened
to eclipse that of the Scottis h king. I n fact, the early history of the MacDonalds
is the only hist ory of no t only the Western Isles but also of the greater part
of th e Highland s.
The founder of the clan was Somerled, son of Gillebride. The his tory of Gillebride,
who lived about the end of the tenth and beginnin g of the eleventh century,
is involved in obscurity. Apparently throu gh so me political misfortune, Gillebride
had been deprived of his pos sessi ons and forced to seek concealment with his
son, Somerled, in Mo rvern . About this time the Norwegians held the inhabitants
of the Wes tern Isles and western mainland seaboard in terror by their piratica
l incu rsions. Somerled put himself at the head of the inhabitants o f Morver
n, expelled the Norwegians, and made himself master of the wh ole of M orvern,
Lochaber, and North Argyll. He later reconquered sout hern Arg yll. About 1135
Kind David I reconquered from the Norwegian s the isla nds of Man, Arran, and
Bute. These islands seem to have bee n conferre d on Somerled by King David.
Though Somerled was now very p owerful, h e could not hope to cope with the strength
of the Norwegia n King of t he Isles. He therefore effected by policy what he
feared n ot to be ab le to effect by strategy. He obtained in marriage Ragnhild
is, daughte r of the Norwegian King of the Isles. The issue of this ma rriage
wer e three sons, Dugall, Reginald (or Ranald), and Angus.
Olave the Red, Norwegian King of the Isles, was murdered in th e Isle of Man
by his nephews, and succeeded by his son, Godred the Bl ack, wh o, at the time
of his father's death, was in Norway. Godred pr omptly arrested and executed
his cousins, the murderers of his father . Godre d had not been long on the throne
of Man and the Isles befor e his tyr anical conduct estranged the affections
of many of his subje cts. A nu mber of these, headed by a powerful noble named
Thorfinn, ap proached Somerled, who had now assumed the title of Lord of Argyll,
a nd asked that his son Dugall be proclaimed King of the Isles, in roo m of his
u ncle, Godred. Somerled readily agreed. Throfinn accordingl y took Duga ll through
the isles, with the execption of Man, and force d the inhab itants to acknowlege
Dugall as their King. Godred, alarme d by the int elligence of this revolt, sailed
north with a powerful fl eet but was met by Somerled with a flight of eighty
galleys. A blood y but indecis ive naval battle was fought in 1156, resulting
in a trea ty, accordin g to which Godred conceded to the sons of Somerled the
So uth Isles, r eserving for himself the North Isles and Man. The North I sles
were th ose north of the point of Ardnamurchan, while among the S outh Isles
w as included the peninsula of Kintyre. Despite the treaty , Somerled in vaded
Man two years later, and routed Godred, who fled t o Norway, whe re he remained
until the death of Somerled. Up to this t ime all the i sles appear to have acknowledged
their allegiance to Nor way.
Somerled was not able to wage war with the Scottish king, Malcol m IV , but their
contests were for the time ended in 1159 by treaty. F res h disputes arose, however,
and in 1164 Somerled landed a large for ce on the Clyde, near Renfrew. Here he
was met by an army under the H ig h Steward of Scotland, and utterly defeated,
both Somerled and hi s so n Gillecolum (by his first marriage) being slain.
After the death of Somerled, Man returned to its allegiance to G odred . Mull,
Coll, Tiree, and Jura seem to have fallen to Dugall, Some rled' s oldest son by
his second marriage; Islay, Kintyre, and part o f Arra n were the portion of
Reginald, the second son by the same marr iage; while the remainder of Arran
as well as Bute came under the swa y of A ngus, the youngest of the three brothers.
All three brothers we re the n styled Kings of the Isles, while their cousin,
Reginald, so n of God red, had the title of King of Man and the Isles. Dugall,
besi des the teritories which he received by right of his mother, on the d eath
of Somerled, obtained among other possessions the important dist rict of Lorn
as his paternal heritage.
The principal portion of the mainland possessions of Somerled, 1 st Lo rd of
Argyll, appear to have fallen to Somerled, his grandson, a nd so n of Gillecolum,
the first Somerled's son, by his first marriage.
In 1221 Somerled, the son of Gillecolum, was defeated in Argyl l by Al exander
II, King of Scots, and forced to fly to the Isles, whe re he d ied.
Events finally reduced immediate descendants of the first Somerl ed, L ord of
Argyll, to the families of Dugall and Reginald, his two e ldes t sons by his
second marriage.
From Dugall sprung the Clan Dougall or MacDougalls of Argyll an d Lorn .
Reginald, second son of the first Somerled by his second marriag e, fo unded
two families. Donald, the elder son, was progenitor of th e Cla n Donald or MacDonalds
of Islay; while his brother Roderick, o r Ruari , founded the Clan Ruari or the
Macrories of Bute.
In consequence of the famous Battle of Largs, 1263, when Haco, K ing o f Norway,
was defeated by Alexander III, King of Scots, a treat y was affected by Magnus,
King of Norway, the successor of Haco, an d Alexan der III, in 1266, whereby
the overlordship of all the Wester n Isles w ere transferred from the Norwegian
Crown to that of Scotland.
After this there seems to have been a rearrangement of the posse ssion s of some
of the descendatns of the great Somerled. The island s of Sk ye and Lewis were
conferred on the Earl of Ross, and Somerled' s desce ndants were also deprived
of Man, Arran, and Bute. The Clan Ru ari of Bute, hewever, obtained compensation
by the grant of lands i n the Nor th Isles. The progenitor of the Clan Ruari
left two sons, Du gal, who died without issue, and Allan, who left one son, Roderic.
Th is Roderi c was succeeded by his only son, Ranald, who was assassinate d at
Pert h in 1346 by the Earl of Ross. With Ranald expired the mal e line of t he
chiefs of the Clan Ruari. Ranald's only sister, Amy, wa s married t o John, Chief
of Clan Donald.
During the wars of succession for the Scottish throne between th e Bal iol and
Comyn faction on the one side, and that of Bruce on th e other , Alexander, Chief
of Clan Dougall, and Alexander, Chief of Cl an Dona ld, supported the former
party. Consequently, when Bruce vanqu ished h is opponents, both those chiefs
were foreited.
MacDougall, however, retained a portion of his once wide domains , inc luding
Dunolly, which still remains the seat of the Chief of th e Cla n Dougall.
Alexander, Chief of th Clan Donald, was imprisoned by Robert th e Bruc e in Dundonald
Castle, where he died. His possessions were fo r the mo st part conferred on
his brother, Angus Og, who had been a st eady sup porter of Bruce from the beginning.
Angus Og, with a large nu mber of his clan, was with Bruce at Bannockburn.

MacDougall
The early history of this once powerful clan has been told unde r tha t of Clan
Donald. The chronicles of King Alexander II's Highlan d expe dition decribe Ewen,
then Chief of Macdougall, as "a very comel y knig ht," which illustrates
that West Highland chiefs, far from bein g unco uth barbarians, were equals of
any in the courteous code of chi valry.
MacDougall of Lorn was on the losing side in the contest for th e Scot tish throne
between Bruce and Baliol. An episode in that contes t is t he story of the Broch
of Lorn, won by MacDougall of Lorn from B ruce a t the Pass of Brander. After
Bruce's accession to the throne th e MacD ougalls were deprived of the greater
part of their lands. The c hief o f the clan appears, however, during the reign
of David II, Bruc e's su ccessor, to have married a grand-daughter of Robert
the Bruce , and th ereafter to have had his lands restored. On the death of Ewen
, Lord o f Lorn, without male issue, his estates passed to the Stewart s of Inn
ermeath. John Stewart of Innermeath and his brother, Robert , having m arried
the two daughters and co-heiresses of Ewen. As the h eir of th e line, Stewart,
did not continue the name MacDougall, the c hiefship of the clan passed to MacDougall
of Dunolly, the next male h eir. His descendant is now the Chief of the Clan
Dougall, and Baron o f Dunolly . In 1715 MacDougall of that Ilk joined the Earl
of Mar, an d his esta tes were forfeited. They were, however, restored just befor
e the Risi ng of "the '45," so the MacDougalls did not go out for Prin
ce Charles . The ancient castle of Dunolly, on its crag above Oban, st ands abov
e Dunolly House the seat of the chief. The eldest daughter o f a MacDo ugall
chief bears, whilst unmarried, the old title "Maid o f Lorn." Ma dam
MacDougall of MacDougall and Dunolly succeeded to th e chiefship i n 1952.

SUMERLED or SOMERLED, Lord of the Isles (d. 1164), was, accordin g to the Celtic
tradition, the son of Gillegrede, son of Gilladoman , sixt h in descent from
Godfrey MacFergus, called in the Irish chroni cle To shach of the Isles; but
some suppose him of Norse origin. His f ather , a reputed thane of Argyll, is
said to have been expelled fro m his p ossessions, and forced to conceal himself
for a time in Morven ; but h aving placed his son at the head of the men of Morven
to resis t a ban d of Norse pirates, the son defeated them, and the prestige
th us won enabled him afterwards not only to regain his father's possess ions,
b ut to make himself master of the greater part of Argyle, of wh ich he claimed
to be lord or regulus. Along with the pretender to th e maarmo rship of Ross,
he rebelled against Malcolm IV in 1153, but fo und it n ecessary to come to terms
with him. About 1140 he had marrie d Ragnhil dis or Effrica, daughterof Olave
the Red, king of Man, by wh om he ha d three sons: Dugall, Reginald or Ranald,
and Angus. By a for mer marr iage he had a son Gillecolm; and, according to the
'Chronicl e of Man, ' he had a fifth son, Olava. After the death of Olava, kin
g of Man, T horfin, son of Ottar, one of the lords of Man, resolved t o depose
God fred teh Black, king of Man, as an oppressor, and offere d to Somerled ,
if he would assist him, to make his son Dugall king i n Godfred's st ead. Somerled
was nothing loth, and Throfin carried Dug all through al l the isles, except
Man, and forced the inhabitants t o acknowledge hi m, hostages being taken for
their obedience. Thereupo n Godfred collec ted a fleet and proceeded against
the galleys of th e rebels, reinforc ed and commanded by Somerled. As the result
of a bl oody and indecisiv e battle fought in 1156 Godfred was induced to com
e to terms by cedin g to the sons of Somerled the south isles and reta ining
to himself th e north isles and Man. Two years later Somerled in vaded Man with
fift y-three ships, and laid waste the whole island, Go dfred being compell ed
to flee to Norway. The power wielded by Somerle d aroused the jealo usy of Malcolm
IV, who demanded that Somerled shou ld resign his posse ssions to him, and hold
them in future as a vassa l of the king of Sco ts. This Somerled declined to
do, and, war bein g declared, he in 116 4 sailed with 160 galleys up the Clyde
and lande d his forces near Ren frew. Hardly, however, had they disembarked,
whe n they were attacked and put to flight with great slaughter, Somerle d and
his son Gillecol m being among the slain. According to one accou nt, King Malcolm
sent a boat to convey the corpse to Icolmkill, wher e it was buried at the royal
expense, but according to another accoun t it was buried in the church of Sadall
in Kintyre, where Reginald, t he son of Somerled, aft rerwards erected a monastery.
According to Cel tic tradition, while a son of Gillecolm became superior of Argyll,
th e isles were divided am ong his other three sons, Dugall, Reginld, an d Angus.

In 1595 Donald McIllichoan for himself and his succession as on e of t he native

Cowan, Cowans, Cowen. Common surnames in Ayrshire, Dumfriesshire , an d other
Lowland counties. (1) Sometimes explained as from Scots c owan , a dry-stone-dyker,
but I doubt this explanation. (2). It may b e a c orruption of Colquohoun, the
common pronunciation of which is Co hoon . Mr. Alexander Cowan, father of Sir
John Cowan of Beeslack is sa id t o have left on record that many of his grandfather's
books bore t he n ame of Colquhoun. (3) In the south Highlands the 'Mac' of Macille
chom hghain disappears from the name and in Argyllshire. e.g. Iain Mac Còmh
ain becomes Iain Còmhan in Gaelic while the English equivalen t is Cow an.

There was an old family of Cowane in S tirling (The Stirling antiquary, v.2,

James
MCCOWN(1) was born about 1744 in ,
Augusta Co., Virginia. He died about 1825 in , Cumberland Co., Kentucky. He
was buried in , Cumberland Co., Kentucky. James was a Revolutionary War soldier.
He lived in Augusta Co. , Virgi nia, 1744-1779 (1778, it became Rockbridge Co.,
Virginia); I n Montgom ery Co., Virginia to 1787; Possibly in Tennessee or (North
C arolina) to 1798; in Lincoln Co., Kentucky to 1809; in Cumberland Co. , Kentuck
y 1810 until his death.
James inherited from his father's will in 1761, "that plantatio n in t he
forks and my part of that plantation Samuel Norwood formly l ived o n..."
His father, Francis, bought 300 acres on Cedar Creek of J ames R iver on 26 Nov.
1751 from Robert and Elizabeth Renick, at a pla ce cal led Timber Plain, with
a corner to John Poage. He sold 250 acre s of t his on 26 Nov. 1755 to Jno. Maxwell
(with a corner to Jno. Poag e, Sr . land, and also a corner to his own land).
So the remaining 5 0 acre s was probably part of the 250 received by James.
It is unclear where the rest of the land came from, but the tota l acr eage probably
amounted to the 250 acres sold by James and Jane , his w ife, of Rockbridge Co.,
Virginia, on 7 Sept. 1779, to James Wa lker. T he land appears to be in two parts.
The deed mentions the corn er of h is old survey, corner to Samuel McDowell's
land, now William T aylors' , corner to his old line. Jean the wife of said McCown
volunta rily re linquished her dower of the land. The deed was acknowledge d
7 Sept. 1 779.
Beginning at a hickory and white oak corner to his old survey an d run ning thence
north 50 degrees east 50 poles to three white oaks ; nort h 30 degrees west 54
poles to four white oaks, corner to Samue l McDow el's land, now William Taylors;
north 75 degrees east 28 pole s north 34 degrees east 40 poles to two hickories;
north 15 degrees w est 92 p oles; north 55 degrees west 66 poles to a white and
black oak ; south 75 degrees west 110 poles; south 80 degrees east 312 poles
t o a corne r to his old line, and with a line of the same north 40 degr ees
east 120 poles to the beginning, and then a line laying in fift y acres of the
old track between the aforesaid tract and John Maxwel l according to the corner
of a dividing line run between said McCow n and Maxwell. ..to the said 250
acres.
Two hundred acres of the above land was surveyed for Francis McC own b y James
Trimble and Thomas Lewis on 8 April 1753. "Lying on th e hed o f Cedar Creek
in the forks of the James River joining his ow n land."
By 1782, James was in Montgomery Co., Virginia. On 16 Oct. 1782 , Will iam Foster
assigned James 200 acres of land in the rich valle y on th e water of the north
fork of the Holston River..."Beginning a t a lyn n at the foot of Walkers
Mountain...." William Foster was an a ssigne e of Robert Craven, who was
an assignee of Robert Wallace.
The children listed for James and Jane have not been proven. N o recor d has
been found naming their children. These children lived a round t hem in Lincoln,
Pulaski and Casey Cos., Kentucky. After the de ath of James, they continued to
live around each other in Lincoln Co. , Tenne ssee. This is based on research
by Bernice (Garner) McCown an d Mary ( Maples) Rury, and Leonard J. McCown.
