The importation record from Orange Co., Virginia raises the poss ibili ty of
a first marriage for Francis to Mary and also the possibil ity o f two children
Mackham [or Malcom] and Elizabeth by her. Elizabe th i s another form of Isabel.
However, since the record is not a con temp orary record of the period, but
is in fact a record that has bee n rec opied later when the record book was wearing
out there could b e anoth er possibility. Perhaps Mary was actually the abbreviation
Mar gt. fo r Margaret, and Elizabeth was Isabel. It seems obvious that Mar kham
w as suppose to have been Malcom.
If this first family did exist, then no further record of them h as be en located
and apparently they did not survive the hardships o f front ier Virginia. In
either case a further thought on Malcom. Th e name ap parently was important
to Francis as he named a younger so n Malcom la ter on. Perhaps this was the
name of Francis' father.
She was married to Francis MCCOWN about 1729 in
, , , Ireland.

AGNESS(1) was born about 1754 in ,
Augusta Co., Virginia. She died on JUN 28 1844 in , Franklin Co., Tennessee.
She was buried in , Franklin Co., Tennessee. The name Nancy is a diminutive
of Agnes. Agnes was bound out t o John McCown of Kerr's Creek.
Agnes and William Logan were early settlers of Harrodsburg, Kent ucky . Harrodsburg
was captured by Indians on two different occasions . Th e second time was in
1776 or 1777. Hugh was a infant in arms. Th e ent ire fort was captured and the
inhabitants held prisoner. Of al l the p risoners, Agnes (McCown) Logan was singled
out to run the gaun tlet. S he was informed that if she made it without falling,
the captu red pri soners would be released. If she did not, they would all be
ta ken awa y.
She placed Hugh in the arms of another woman and ran the gauntle t. A t the end,
and she had not fallen, others went to assist her. Whe n th ey reached her, they
found that her eye had been scooped out wit h a p owder horn.
After this Agnes had ten more children by William Logan. He die d in 1 796 and
she married Finley who was younger than she was, and ha d two more children.

am (St. Louis, Mo.) January 1948 (No. 23) 2.
Some time in the early Colonial days, the Logans came from Irela nd t o America
and settled in Virginia. They were early settlers in th e wi lderness country
of Kentucky (then a part of Virginia). They help ed b uild the fort at Harrodsburg,
and were among those held as prison ers by the Indians when the fort was attacked
and captured by the sav ages .
One of the prisoners was selected to "run the gauntlet." (In thi s
tes t, if the runner successfully passed through a line under terrif ic pu nishment,
the prisoners were all to be released; failure of th e gaunt let runner meant
their doom.)
The lot fell to a little Irish woman, who held her small baby i n her arms. She
was Sarah Agnes (McCoun) [sic] Logan, mother of Hug h Logan . Handing her baby
into the care of another woman, she resolut ely ent ered the cruel ordeal and
by her courage she was able to survi ve the Indians' numerous weapons. When she
reached her goal it was di scovere d that she had lost an eye--scooped from her
head by a powde r horn.
